A.S.V.Gay has grown over sixteen years into the largest LGBTQ+ student association in the Netherlands — a place where all genders, sexualities and nationalities come together. The studies? That’s secondary. Your identity? That’s celebrated. There’s room here for ‘let’s have fun’ during our weekly drinks, activities and social groups, as well as focus on (self-)development and social issues through our 20 committees. For this World Pride we’re sailing together with Student Pride, a Pride Amsterdam committee made up of A.S.V.Gay and enthusiastic volunteers.
Students are a loud, indispensable voice within Pride. We are often the first to speak up when the world goes the wrong way, fighting for the world we want to live in. Especially now, as LGBTQIA+ rights are under pressure worldwide, we want this World Pride to make one thing clear: Pride is Protest. We celebrate the freedoms we have today, remember the battles already fought, and focus on what still needs to be done. You must learn from the past so the same mistakes aren’t repeated. The theme UNITY? For us it means standing together. We stand on this boat for those who cleared the path years ago — but above all for the generation now that can’t or doesn’t dare to fight. For the young people who stand at the side or watch online and wonder if there’s a place for them: we sail for you. The struggle isn’t over until everyone feels safe enough to be proudly themselves all year round.
Our boat sails like a timeline through the canals. We show where we came from and where we’re going: from the first Pink Saturday and Stonewall to the recent protests against anti-LGBTQIA+ legislation in Europe. Expect protest signs and chants, but also a DJ playing the best sing-alongs. Change happens when you take to the streets (or the water) together — but we’re also here to celebrate what we’ve already achieved.
