Every day at Allen & Overy we work hard to create an environment where everyone feels comfortable, confident and proud to be who you are, who you love and where you come from. We listen to each other to understand the experiences and barriers that colleagues sometimes face. We do this by talking to each other in small and larger groups, in the Netherlands and in all other countries where we have offices. This allows us to measure progress and encourages us to be honest with ourselves when progress is not what it should be. We hold ourselves accountable and hold each other to account. We also have these conversations with our clients and other organisations we work with. This can sometimes be difficult. Because change does not come about without resistance, internal struggle or confrontation.
Change is necessary, we are convinced of it. It is by bringing together different worlds, perspectives, genders and mentalities that the best ideas and most creative solutions are born. At Allen & Overy, we know that being the same is not going to help us advance as a company. We all benefit best when we can be ourselves and when what makes us different is embraced. That is why diversity, equality and inclusion are central to the kind of company we want to be. We are committed to supporting a culture that embraces differences and makes everyone who works with us feel welcome and safe. We promote this message globally under the All in banner.
We are ambitious and proud of the progress we have made, but we are certainly not there yet. We will continue to ask each other tough questions and challenge each other until we are truly inclusive. Until we are, as our D&I partner Hendrik Jan Biemond put our mission, “that inclusive office, where everyone can safely be themselves, different from others. So, not ‘Does this person fit into our team?’ But: ‘He or she is different and so we need him or her very much’. We also want to spread this message during the Canal Parade on 6 August.
