whatever your gender TOGETHER we cure cancer

Cancer affects everyone, no matter who you are, and makes everyone vulnerable, insecure, fearful but sometimes also very strong. For cancer patients from the LGBT+ community, it is often still very difficult to speak with doctors and nurses about cancer, cancer treatment and life after cancer treatment in relation to their sexual orientation.

Antoni van Leeuwenhoek is a specialised cancer hospital, a leading international research institute and an important training institute for healthcare professionals and researchers. By carrying out groundbreaking research, we are increasingly able to understand cancer and make it a treatable disease; something we are proud of. At the Antoni van Leeuwenhoek, research results are translated into improved treatments very efficiently because researchers and doctors all have the same goal and work together in one building.

Research and cancer treatment can only be carried out as a team; no one can carry out research or treatment entirely alone. People come to us from all over the world and from various backgrounds. Together, we have one goal: to give cancer patients the best treatment.

We want to show that we are there for everyone with cancer and that everyone feels free and safe to speak out about their sexual orientation. We have also achieved a lot together: cancer is increasingly a treatable disease; we are proud of that. We also want to give our own LGBT+ community a shot in the arm because we are proud of what we do together.

The concept is that we work together to cure cancer (researchers, doctors, nurses, cancer research funders and patients and their families) and to show that we are here for everyone.

My Gender, My Pride is the theme of Pride 2022. For us, this means that everyone counts and therefore, together through research and care, we can mean the most for cancer patients now and in the future. In the run-up to the Pride, we will be portraying employees of different genders to raise awareness and acceptance. The message on the boat is “whatever your gender TOGETHER we cure cancer” with “together” leading the way because only together can we cure cancer.
