The fire brigade is there for everyone 24/7. As an emergency services organisation, we are at the heart of society. That is why we strive to be a reflection of the society we serve. The aim is to be a point of recognition for everyone: for people we help, but also for our own (future) colleagues. Diversity must be a fundamental part of our fire service identity. This requires continuous development and renewal.

That is why the Netherlands Fire Service feels it is important to not only keep following the developments we see in society as an employer, but also to experience them ourselves. We realise that we as the Fire Service Netherlands can play an important role in this.

The fire service is a professional group that is easily subject to masculine stereotypes. Although we are increasingly aware of this, we still have steps to take. Let’s talk about firefighters instead of firemen and -women. These small changes can be a grand gesture that makes everyone feel at home. We are committed to promoting and normalising diversity and inclusiveness within our organisation. We do this through a national working group in which the various networks are represented. Together, we are building an increasingly inclusive organisation and giving people the tools to achieve this. That is why it is so important to start a broad-based movement together. Because diversity and inclusiveness should be about all of us, about everyone being able to be themselves. And that we at the fire brigade approach everyone as themselves. That is how we achieve diversity as a normal thing. That is our dot on the horizon.

Everyone should feel free to be themselves, in whatever organisation. The Dutch Fire Brigade is committed to this. We are proud of all our 25,000 firefighters, a word in which we hope every gender can feel at home.
