During WorldPride 2026 Diemen celebrates twice over. Diemen turns 800 years old and has long been an active rainbow community. That’s easy to say — and we make it true! From a warm welcome for all colours, identities and beliefs, and concrete agreements on care and safety. During Diemen Pride and at WorldPride — and all year round.
Diemen is proud. Few places in the Netherlands can say they are 800 years old. Of course the village has changed a lot over those centuries. Yet, alongside its big neighbour Amsterdam, Diemen still has a village-like feel. That mix attracts a colourful mix of people. Village and worldly, gay and straight and everything in between, and of course every skin colour. Everyone is welcome in Diemen — in the café, at the sports club and at the municipality. We’re proud of the village’s inclusive character! Participation in this WorldPride was initiated by several residents in collaboration with the municipality. We’re taking this chance in our anniversary year to join the boats parade properly: we commissioned a Diemen progress flag, we’re organising an exhibition with portraits and stories of queer residents, and we celebrated an inclusive love anniversary to mark the opening of civil marriage to same-sex couples.
Today we sail with a proud representation of our village: queer residents, queer officials and key figures and their allies. Mayor Erik Boog is on board, as is alderman Matthijs van den Berg, the chair of Pink Diemen, several artists, community leaders and local heroes. And we won’t just join the Amsterdam boats parade — afterwards we’ll sail back to Diemen so as many people as possible can share in WorldPride 2026. A party tent will be ready at the Diemen quay to welcome us, where we’ll celebrate all over again. Welcome!
Let it be clear: a lot has changed in Diemen over the past 800 years, but one thing has remained the same: in Diemen everyone can be themselves. During WorldPride 2026 Diemen will show itself. With pride, with colour and together. Not only for now, but for the future. Diemen is forever!
