Description
As swimmers from Gay Swim Amsterdam (GSA) and water polo players from Waterproof, we bring the energy of the pool to the canals. As queer athletes, we represent a vibrant community of more than 200 competitors of all ages, skill levels and gender identities. Our shared mission is to create a safe, inclusive home in the water where athletes can embrace their sport and identity without compromise.
We represent the beautiful mix of sport, community and identity. Our participation shows that despite our differences we can come together as one. By joining forces instead of each doing our own thing, we show that our sports may be different, but our mission is the same: to create a visible, athletic queer presence that inspires others to dive into the community without fear.
A single drop that falls into the water sets off a chain reaction of ripples. Our boat stands for that ‘Ripple Effect’: the idea that real unity comes from small, brave acts. In our sports every kick and every stroke sends a vibration to the person next to us. But outside the water we often hold back. We correct a pronoun or don’t speak our truth, afraid to ‘disturb the water’. When we raise our voice, we create a ripple. That one brave act of authenticity gives the person next to us the courage to do the same.
The design of our boat shows in several ways how small actions can lead to big change. An ever-growing wave of iridescent and shiny panels wraps around the boat, while ribbons, flags, banners and panels from small to large — plus an infectious choreography — amplify this movement into a powerful dynamic. This way we show that if you have the power to change your own world, you’re part of a wave that can turn the tide for everyone.
