LGBTQi+ themes have been present throughout the ages. As a maritime historical museum, The Maritime Museum has countless sources demonstrating that homosexuality and gender identity have been prevalent for centuries, and in 2024, we proudly step forward with love. For the first time, The Maritime Museum will participate in the Pride, setting course towards a world where division no longer exists. We raise the rainbow flag on a ship where everyone can be themselves, regardless of sexual orientation, love preference, gender identity, and how they choose to express themselves.

The Maritime Museum illustrates how the maritime world is connected to the lives of so many individuals. Under the motto ‘water connects worlds,’ the museum collects and shares stories that tell an overlooked history. Our research into gay subculture on Dutch passenger ships in the sixties offers a unique insight into the connecting power of water. Personal stories from queer crew members about tolerance and inclusion at sea emphasize how water connects us. Not only physically between borders but also as a symbolic space of freedom and acceptance.

On the flat back of a ship, called the stern, the origin of the ship is indicated. In our case, that’s Amsterdam. During this fantastic celebration, we’d like to hold a mirror up to Amsterdam: are we as a city and as visitors where we want to be regarding diversity and inclusion? On that day, we will dance for connection. Our participation in the boat parade will be a lively and colorful expression of the unity water symbolizes, a Sea of Love, and we look forward to proudly sharing this message with the public: Water connects worlds.
