The Museum Boat – We Are All Works of Art

We are all works of art.

Unique in form, layered in meaning, always in motion.

Just as people differ, so do the stories we tell and the places where we recognise ourselves.

In museums we see ourselves reflected.

There we come together as a collection of individuals.

With the Museum Boat, the Dutch museum sector shows how diverse and inclusive we are. We make a powerful statement and demonstrate that art and culture connect people. We celebrate freedom and self-expression: We Are All Works of Art. It will be a visual spectacle featuring living artworks designed by artist and designer Bas Kosters, with participants from across the museum sector forming a colourful reflection of beliefs and identities.

The living artworks represent the diversity of museums and society — from art and history to nature, science and ethnography. The colours and designs recur in the boat’s palette and the outfits: a spectrum symbolising all identities and convictions. Every colour of the LGBTQIA+ flag comes together as one: unity in diversity.

Go! As you are.

For 100 years (since 1926) the Museumvereniging has been the sector organisation for Dutch museums. We connect over 500 museums with each other and with society. Together we work towards a strong, future-proof museum sector that is inclusive, diverse and accessible to everyone, regardless of circumstance, background, gender, identity or belief.

We do this through advocacy, knowledge sharing and collaboration within the sector — and through the Museumkaart, which makes museums accessible to a wide audience. Museums are, after all, by and for everyone.

Through their collections, museums tell remarkable stories, encourage dialogue and connect the past with the present and future. Museums are places for meeting and reflection and play an important social, civic and economic role in society.
