Description

Queer Museum Foundation is building a new museum in Amsterdam’s city centre.

Queer Museum shares stories that whisper, rub, glitter and shout. Stories of people who cannot be contained by rules or roles. About gender, sexuality, love and identity in all their forms. Through art, heritage and personal voices we are creating a space for encounter and imagination — and a future in which freedom, equality and safety are taken for granted for everyone.

During WorldPride Amsterdam 2026, Queer Museum presents 'Living Gallery – Queer Icons United': a floating hall of honour in which portraits of queer icons come to life. From from Marsha P. Johnson and Emperor Hadrian to Freddie Mercury, Lil Nas X, Madonna, Susan Sontag and Divine. This tableau vivant shows how queer culture connects generations and communities. Visible, illuminated and on a pedestal.

Queer Museum is creating a permanent home where queer history and contemporary culture come together. A space that brings forward overlooked perspectives, with special attention to voices that are often missing. Together with artists, thinkers and activists we create room for encounter, imagination and change.

That space is more urgent than ever. Worldwide queer rights are under pressure. In the Netherlands anti-LGBTQ+ violence is also increasing. In this context queer history is not optional but essential. By making stories visible as part of our collective memory, queer history becomes a source of strength and a compass.

In the run-up to WorldPride Amsterdam 2026, Queer Museum is contributing to a major exhibition about Amsterdam’s queer history at De Nieuwe Kerk: 'Queer Amsterdam, the pink city', on view from 9 July 2026.
