Unity for the Community: School as a safe space:
Just like last year, the political rainbow networks of GroenLinks, D66, CDA, VVD and PvdA will join the Canal Parade of Pride Amsterdam with the motto Unity for the Community. Each year we choose a theme that is politically and socially relevant at this time and for which we want to fight together as networks.
Earlier we drew attention to safety on the streets for LGBTIQA+ people, Multiparenting and the rights of Trans people. This year we have chosen a theme that, in our opinion, needs attention in the public debate. Namely being able to be yourself, safely at school. Being bullied at school and not being able to be yourself is something that sadly almost everyone in our community has experienced. And that really needs to change.
Far too often we hear that LGBTIQA+ young people do not feel safe at school. Not safe to be able to express themselves, talk about their problems or deal with bullying or even physical violence. Furthermore, the harmful misinformation about education and teaching packages that is spread via social media has a further negative influence on this.
In the Netherlands we have a wonderfully diverse pallet of different school types and types. But one thing is central to us as political rainbow networks, school must be a safe environment in which to grow up and develop yourself as a human being and a responsible citizen. Although we, as networks, think differently about education, this is what we stand for in unity towards national politics.Together we want to show society that school should be a safe place for everyone, no matter how you identify yourself.
