In the dull Swedish provincial town of Åmål there isn’t much to do. The gloomy teenager Agnes has only recently moved there and doesn’t fit in. She is secretly in love with Elin, the most popular girl at school, but has nowhere to turn with her feelings. Agnes’s world collapses when Elin humiliates her at her 16th birthday party. Elin, however, who becomes fascinated by Agnes’s courage, later regrets it. Slowly the two grow closer to each other.
