Stories of a lost generation: how the AIDS epidemic changed a community.
Many young LGBTQ+ people know that there was an AIDS epidemic, but the deeper understanding is missing. Between 1985 and 1995 a generation lost its circle of friends, marked by exclusion and helplessness. At the same time, unprecedented solidarity emerged through buddies and the COC.
Fortunately, HIV is now a treatable, chronic condition, which has blurred the historical context. Survivors carry this collective memory, but it is too rarely shared.
During WorldPride 2026 the Shakespeare Club of COC Amsterdam e.o. brings this essential awareness to life with storytelling about loss, love and courage.
The lost generation must not become a forgotten generation.
