What connects Tchaikovsky, Britten and Bernstein? These influential composers were queer and worked either in secret or in open defiance. Cellist Harriet Krijgh and her musical colleagues bring their stories and music fully into the light.
From there is reason to believe that several composers were homosexual. For example, did Händel, Lully, Ravel, Saint-Saëns and Schubert fall in love with someone of the same sex? In any case, they lived in times and societies where they could not be open about it. In this programme by cellist Harriet Krijgh, works by queer and queer-friendly composers are performed, with explanations of how their identities and the spirit of their times influenced their music.
