Exhibition ‘Queer Amsterdam, the Pink City’
An exhibition about the eventful and remarkable history of Amsterdam’s LGBTQIA+ community. A cultural-historical story of love, exclusion, courage, struggle, and freedom.
Description
Queer Amsterdam, the pink city
This summer, during WorldPride 2026, the exhibition “Queer Amsterdam, the pink city” opens on Thursday 9 July. A major exhibition about the eventful and remarkable history of Amsterdam’s LGBTQIA+ community. A cultural‑historical story about love, exclusion, courage, struggle and freedom, told in a location that was once a setting for religious teaching and exclusion.
The Nieuwe Kerk is presenting the exhibition together with the LGBTQIA+ community to mark 25 years since civil marriage was opened to everyone. Amsterdam was a global frontrunner. We also celebrate Pride Amsterdam’s 30th anniversary and the 80th anniversary of COC. At the same time, the exhibition shows that hard‑won freedoms remain fragile.
The exhibition will be on view from 9 July 2026 until 4 April 2027
Queer Amsterdam, the pink city takes place on the occasion of WorldPride Amsterdam 2026. The exhibition has been realised in collaboration with numerous organisations, museums and experts, with IHLIA LGBTI Heritage as principal lender and partner. We thank Amsterdam’s queer communities for their indispensable contributions via the advisory groups of Stichting Queer Museum.
