Armand Goldman (Robin Williams) owns the Birdcage, a nightclub in South Beach, Miami. He lives above the club with Albert (Nathan Lane), Birdcage’s headline performer who appears as drag queen Starina. Their fabulous life is disrupted when Armand’s son becomes engaged to the daughter of ultraconservative senator Kevin Keeley (Gene Hackman). Keeley’s political future is threatened by a colleague’s sex scandal, and he sees meeting his future in-laws as the perfect escape from media attention. But what happens when the family doesn’t match his ideal?
