Transgender people around the world are systematically excluded from care. In response, trans communities in cities everywhere have built their own clinics. By trans people, for trans people.
The Hands That Heal is a photographic and journalistic portrait of that movement. From From Bangkok to San Francisco, from Johannesburg to Amsterdam: Ernst Coppejans photographed and interviewed, in collaboration with Trans United Europe, the people behind these clinics. Not as symbols, but as individuals who created something because it was necessary.
At a time when trans rights are under pressure worldwide, this exhibition shows what is possible when a community takes matters into its own hands.
On display at Oosterdokskade, Amsterdam, from 24 July to 14 August 2026.
