The Foundation

Stichting Pride Amsterdam is a non-profit organisation that works for emancipation, social, civic and legal equality and acceptance of gay, bisexual and lesbian people and also for those who do not want to — or cannot — conform to dominant societal gender roles (such as masculine women, feminine men and queers), or for whom the sex assigned at birth does not match how they feel (such as transgender people). Visibility of diversity is essential to achieve this. What you see can’t be ignored.

Pride Amsterdam was organised by Stichting Gay Business Amsterdam (GBA) from 1996 to 2005, by Stichting ProGay from 2006 to 2013, and since 2014 by Stichting Pride Amsterdam (formerly Amsterdam Gay Pride, AGP).

The festival is shaped with the help of the following committees: Hospitality, Canal Parade, Pride Walk, Arts & Culture, St. Pride & Sports, Women & Pride, Youth Pride, Senior Pride, Trans Pride, Religion Pride, Fetish Pride and Corporate Pride. These committees advocate for programmes tailored to their target groups and increase visibility for those communities.

Stichting Pride Amsterdam operates under a board model in which the board, in consultation with the director, sets the organisation’s strategic course and oversees its execution. The board has delegated day-to-day affairs and its assigned duties and powers to the director. For its supervisory role the board maintains regular contact with the director and appoints the foundation’s auditor. The board may request the auditor to carry out further investigation into the foundation’s administrative organisation and produce a management report (letter) about it. To also acts as an advisory sounding board and can be engaged for lobbying, representation in relevant networks, and similar tasks.

Pride Ambassadors

Since 2013 Pride Amsterdam has appointed Pride Ambassadors who serve as role models for many in our community. Each ambassador has their own identity and compelling story and together they represent the diversity and colour of the LGBTIQ+ community. Each year this special group is expanded with new faces that fit the year’s theme. An ambassador is appointed for life and at the annual ambassadors’ meeting they welcome the new appointees. Curious about the story behind each face? See here:Ambassadors.
