Trans Pride

Trans Pride exists because trans people have always been there - and because our safety, dignity and rights are still not taken for granted.

The History of Trans Pride within Pride Amsterdam

Amsterdam, 1955.

Long before Trans Pride, Pride or visibility in public space, trans women travelled to the Netherlands for gender-affirming surgery - often in secret, often at great personal risk. Trans Pride stands on the shoulders of generations who fought their existence without public, without protection, but with determination. What required silence then, demands solidarity today. Trans Pride exists because trans people have always been there - and because our safety, dignity and rights are still not taken for granted.

Within WorldPride, we celebrate who we are, but we are not blind to reality. Our history as well as our present has many painful chapters around trans existence. The future too - marked by increasing polarisation, disinformation and attacks on trans lives worldwide - demands unity: within the trans community and with all allies. We are more visible than ever, but also more vulnerable than ever before. Trans Pride is a place for collective strength as well as care. For trans people in all their diversity, and for allies who are willing to listen, learn and stand up for us when needed.

Trans Pride Community

Trans Pride is a community-driven programme. The activities originate from the trans community itself and connect to what is alive, needed and allowed to be celebrated. This approach ensures recognition, support and a programme in which different voices and experiences coexist.

Within Trans Pride , space includes:

  • meeting between generations
  • Dialogue on identity, health and well-being
  • cultural and artistic expression
  • moments of care, rest and self-reflection
  • visible presence in public space

By organising activities spread across the city, the trans community becomes visible in diverse contexts. In doing so, Trans Pride underlines that trans people are a natural and full part of urban life.
