Trans Pride

Trans Pride exists because trans people have always been here — and because our safety, dignity and rights are still not guaranteed.

The history of Trans Pride within Pride Amsterdam

Amsterdam, 1955.

Long before Trans Pride, before Pride or public visibility, trans women travelled to the Netherlands for gender-affirming surgery — often in secret, often at great personal risk. Trans Pride stands on the shoulders of generations who fought to exist without public recognition or protection, but with determination. What once required silence now calls for solidarity. Trans Pride exists because trans people have always been here — and because our safety, dignity and rights are still not guaranteed.

Within WorldPride we celebrate who we are, but we do not ignore reality. Our history and our present contain many painful chapters around trans existence. The future — marked by growing polarization, disinformation and attacks on trans lives worldwide — also calls for unity: within the trans community and with all allies. We are more visible than ever, but also more vulnerable than ever before. Trans Pride is a space for collective strength and care. For trans people in all their diversity, and for allies who are willing to listen, learn and stand with us when needed.

Trans Pride Community

Trans Pride is a community-driven programme. Activities come from the trans community itself and respond to what matters, is needed, and should be celebrated. This approach creates recognition, ownership and a programme where different voices and experiences coexist.

Trans Pride includes, among other things, space for:

  • intergenerational connection
  • dialogue about identity, health and wellbeing
  • cultural and artistic expression
  • moments of care, rest and self-reflection
  • visible presence in public spaces

By organising activities across the city, the trans community becomes visible in diverse contexts. In doing so, Trans Pride underlines that trans people are a natural and full part of urban life.
